Shoptagr

Shoptagr – Should you use it & what about privacy?

In case you don’t know: you can use Shoptagr to help you find the best price on something you’ve been eyeing. You can save something you want to buy on their website or with the button in your browser. When that particular item is on sale, you’ll get notified. A free way to save some money!

But…

I started by making a Shoptagr account. After finalizing your account Shoptagr constantly reminds you to install their button in your browser. I decided NOT to install the button after I read the privacy statement and wasn’t too fond of what was in there.

As you can see above, because of the button (which is always there), they are able to see and read everything you do. You need to give permission for this when installing a button in Google Chrome. I just didn’t feel comfortable doing that.

I added a few items to my Shoptagr list. After I added them, I knew a sale was going on (from 6 pm to 12 pm) in an online store. Shoptagr send me an email about a few of my items being on sale. To be extra clear: I didn’t install the button or the app, but Shoptagr still notifies you, which is nice. And yes, I got the items I’ve been eyeing.

You can also see an overview of the price of your favorite items at the store of your choice from the last few months. I’m not sure what I need to do with this information, as there are no prices given, only a chart as you can see down below.

Recap

I’m not completely convinced about the use of Shoptagr. Online I am a suspicious person and I value my (online) privacy a lot. I tend to read privacy statements, I read reviews about everything. About online purchases of course and also about companies. I read a lot of good reviews about Shoptagr, but there were quite a few negative reviews. Most of them regarding privacy and having difficulty deleting an account.
Of course, I didn’t install the button, but I can add items to my list and they send out emails when your items go on sale. I do think you need to turn email notifications on manually, but that’s ok.

In the end, you’re the only one who can decide if you’re going to make an account and install the button or not. I decided not to, not even for the sake of this article. So I know it’s not a complete review and maybe it does work like magic when installing the button. But I value my privacy more than getting an item I already need for less money. And to be honest, I probably won’t get a lot of use out of it, because I simply forget it’s there. Maybe when you have the button installed it’s totally different and you use it more because you see it sitting in your browser.
